On March 3, Councilmember Curren Price joined Mayor Eric Garcetti in celebration of UNITE HERE! Local 11 and Hospitality Training Academy’s “Serving Our Community” program, an initiative funded by the City and County of LA which reached a milestone of delivering its three millionth meal during the pandemic.
Since 2020, teams of unsung heroes have been catering meals to the most vulnerable, including 10,000 homebound seniors, individuals experiencing homelessness and low-income families throughout the City of Angels. Not only is the program supporting the nourishment of the community during a most turbulent time, but it has also contributed to the creation of 1,100 jobs filled by recently laid-off union and non-union workers.
“Acts of kindness, no matter how big or small, are precisely what we need in our communities as we fight our way through the public health emergency and ultimately try to begin to heal from this dark chapter of our lives,” added Councilman Price. “The need is great and something as simple as receiving a meal offers a glimmer of hope to someone who may be resting on hopelessness, proving together we can all do our part to alleviate some of the heavy burden families are facing.”
These meals are cooked in the industrial kitchens at Levy Restaurants, including the kitchen at the Los Angeles Convention Center in District 9, and a number of Los Angeles hotels.
