Let it Snow in the NEW 9th

 

Time to get your galoshes because the NEW 9th's Annual Winter Wonderland is coming to South Park Recreation Center. The much-anticipated community event, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., will be filled with fun for the whole family.

We will be giving away hundreds of toys and bikes to local children. There will be snow slides, bounce houses, a photo booth and a train for the kids.

This South LA tradition is being brought to CD 9 in partnership with LAPD's Community Safety Partnership (CSP) program, Department of Recreation and Parks, Volunteers of America and Soledad Enrichment Action (SEA). Thanksgiving Comes Early to CD 9

 

 

Through the efforts of Councilman Curren Price nearly 1,400 turkeys have been distributed this week to local families leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday.

"I am grateful to know that one less person has to worry about where their next meal is coming from," said Councilman Price. "No one should ever have to struggle to provide for their family, especially during the holidays."

Each year, the Office of Councilman Price coordinates with more than 50 organizations throughout his District to help give the turkeys away and ensure that people have the holiday they deserve.

"This is the season of giving. It is important for us to join together to try to do everything we can for our neighbors," Councilman Price added.

Square Dedication for Iconic South LA Business

On Thursday Nov. 21, Councilman Curren Price held a special ceremony dedicating the intersection of Central Avenue and 25th Street as “Bowers Retail Square" in honor of the Bowers Family. Their family business has been a fixture in South Los Angeles for over 50 years, spanning over three generations. 

With a history that began with a Greyhound bus ticket and a dream, the patriarch Horace Bowers, now 91, set forth on a cross country journey from New York to Los Angeles in the 1940's. He would settle in LA, eventually purchasing a dry cleaning plant on Central Avenue in the 1960's. 

"Mr. Bowers serves as an example that when you follow your passion, work hard and live your life with integrity, you will leave a legacy," said Councilman Price. "The marker raised in his honor, will serve as inspiration for future generations to have the courage to stand tall and set out for what they want in life."

Being a savvy business man led Mr. Bowers and his wife of 69 years, Alice, to purchase all of the retail storefronts now known as Bowers Retail Complex. Creating roots has always been important to the Bowers family, as well as improving the community they love.

An Announcement Heard Around the World

On Wednesday Nov. 20 , during a press conference held at the LAFC’s Bank of California stadium, Councilman Curren Price joined MLS Commissioner Don Garber, LAFC owner Tom Penn, Liga MX Executive President Enrique Bonilla, Mayor Eric Garcetti, Council President Herb Wesson and Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas to celebrate the announcement that the MLS All-Star Game will be held in the summer of 2020 at the Bank of California stadium in the NEW 9th.

"This is not just a game for us," said Councilman Curren Price. "It is our community, a source of pride and for many, a way of life. Hosting the game in South LA is historical."

The MLS All-Star team will be matched against the top players of Liga MX next July for an unparalleled match with some of the world’s finest athletes.

The expectations are high in this battle of skills, strength and experience, with one thing for certain: the pulse of electricity is being felt throughout the community and all throughout Los Angeles in anticipation of the game.

Emergency Renters Relief Program Workshop in CD 9

The Office of Councilman Curren Price, in partnership with the Housing + Community Investment Department (HCIDLA), the Housing Rights Center (HRC) and All Peoples Community Center, will conduct on Nov. 15, a special workshop from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Emergency Renters Relief Program.

The subsidy program assists individuals and families who have received one or more rent increase notices totaling more than 8 percent since March 15, 2019. The temporary financial assistance is meant to prevent tenant displacement for non-payment of rent through Dec. 31, 2019. The Tenant Protection Act of 2019 goes into effect starting Jan. 1, 2020, shielding renters from future excessive rent increases. 

The rent subsidy from the City will cover the difference between the increased rent since March 15, 2019 minus 8 percent for up to three months. During the workshop Friday, which will take place in Councilman Price's District Office (4301 S. Central Ave., LA 90011), representatives will give an overview of the short-term program and individuals will be on hand to complete application forms to determine eligibility.

Individuals must bring the following documents for intake:

  • Rent increase notice
  • Rental agreement or lease
  • Rent receipts
  • Recent pay stubs
  • 2018 IRS tax filing
  • Social security
  • TANF
  • General assistance (if applicable)
  • Veterans benefit (if applicable)

Taller del Programa de Ayuda de Emergencia Para Inquilinos en el Distrito 9

La Oficina del concejal Curren Price, en asociación con el Departamento de Vivienda e Inversión Comunitaria (HCIDLA), el Departamento de Vivienda Justa (HRC) y All Peoples Community Center, llevará a cabo el 15 de noviembre un taller especial de 10 a.m. a 2 p.m. sobre el Programa de Ayuda de Emergencia Para Inquilinos.

El programa de subsidios ayuda a las personas y familias que han recibido uno o más avisos de aumento de alquiler por un total de más del 8 por ciento desde el 15 de marzo de 2019. La asistencia financiera temporal fue diseñada para evitar el desplazamiento de inquilinos por falta de pago del alquiler hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2019. La Ley de Protección de Inquilinos de 2019 entrará en vigencia a partir del 1 de enero de 2020, protegiendo a los inquilinos de futuros aumentos excesivos de alquiler.

El subsidio de alquiler cubrirá la diferencia entre el aumento del alquiler desde el 15 de marzo de 2019 menos el 8 por ciento por hasta tres meses. Durante el taller este viernes, en la Oficina de Distrito (4301 S. City Program Brings Financial Relief to Renters

The City of LA has established a temporary Emergency Renters Relief Program to help individuals facing rent increases in response to a new state law that prohibits rent gouging but doesn't go into effect until January. 

The citywide program, which provides rent subsidies, will be in effect from now until December 31, 2019. In order to be eligible, individuals must reside in a rental property in Los Angeles, the rental unit must be built prior to January 1, 2005 and the household income needs to be below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

Councilman Curren Price Kicks Off “Don’t Trash CD 9” High School Challenge

As part of continuous efforts to clean up South Los Angeles, Councilman Curren Price launched on Oct. 28 “Don’t Trash CD 9” - a local challenge targeting high school students for a chance to win $5,000. The competition pits 12 area schools against one another to see which students report the most illegal dumping, bulky-item pickup, and graffiti removal requests using the MyLA311 mobile phone app from Oct. 28-Dec. 9.

The Monday celebration, which featured a marching band, cheerleaders and a JROTC, kicked off a series of monthly contests between high schools across South LA. The school that records the most number of MyLA311 service requests will be the winner of the month. A winner will be announced every month for the remainder of the current school year through May 2020. Throughout the duration of the program, Councilman Price is expected to award about $30,000 to participating schools.

“One in three residents living in my District are under 18 years of age,” Councilman Price said. “I hope this friendly competition serves as a reminder that our youth are the future of South LA, and they have an enormous responsibility to their community.

“Whether they’re tackling climate change or fighting for gun control, time and time again, we have seen the power of our young people in action. What this contest aims to do is encourage them to be more environmentally conscious and spark a districtwide movement.”

The participating schools include: Dymally High School, John C. Fremont High School, Santee Education Complex, Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Magnet High School, Ánimo Jackie Robinson Charter High School, Thomas Jefferson High School, Ánimo Ralph Bunche Charter High School, Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School, Wallis Annenberg High School, Alliance Patti And Peter Neuwirth Leadership Academy, Manual Arts High School, and Augustus F. Hawkins High School.

Councilman Price says he thinks the award will serve as an incentive, mobilizing tech-savvy youth to do their part to clean up the areas around their schools, parks and neighborhoods.

“Using the MyLA311 mobile application is the quickest way to notify City departments of work needed to keep LA’s streets, sidewalks, and public areas clean and safe,” said Donna Arrechea, 311 Director. “Today more than 30,000 requests are submitted via the app every month. It's a way for Angelenos to take action and it helps City government become aware of problems so we can do our part.”

The high school competition is part of Councilman Price’s comprehensive and multifaceted “Clean & Green” initiative to promote cleanliness and improve livability for residents in District 9. Showering the Community with CARE

On Oct. 23, the cleaning and rapid engagement (CARE) hygiene trailer made a stop in South LA giving homeless Angelenos an opportunity to use the facilities. The pilot program is expected to roll out throughout the City by February 2020, including one hygiene trailer dedicated solely to The NEW 9th. 

"The simple act of taking a shower is something many of us take for granted yet not everyone has the luxury to do so," said Councilman Curren Price, who is advocating for more homelessness resources in his District. "We anticipate that the addition of these trailers throughout the City will make a positive impact on each person that gets to use them."

The trailer is equipped with three restrooms and showers, one of which is wheelchair accessible. Individuals who use the facility receive a hygiene kit, which includes soap, a tooth brush, tooth paste and a razor.

The service is currently being managed by the outreach group Urban Alchemy who conduct short interviews prior to allowing participation. During the interview process, their number one priority is assessing the needs of the person. Since the inception of the program in September, they have been able to connect individuals with a chance to take a shower while helping to restore confidence and dignity.

The facility was received well by the community with many individuals leaving feeling rejuvenated. One of the participants came out singing after his shower, while another person expressed gratitude for simply being able to shave.

Statement from Councilman Curren Price on Temporary "No-Fault" Eviction Ordinance

Councilmember, Ninth District 

 

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Oct. 22 to enact an emergency ordinance that would prohibit “no-fault” evictions citywide before Assembly Bill 1482 takes effect in January.  

The local ban, which is expected to go into effect on Oct. 23, is in response to a surge in eviction notices and tenants’ complaints due to landlords gouging rent in anticipation of the new State law. AB 1482 restricts raising rents by more than 5 percent plus inflation, and requires landlords to demonstrate just cause before evicting tenants, but not prior to Jan. 1.

Councilman Curren Price co-authored the motion calling for tenant protections. Following an outcry from city leaders and renters, the City Attorney’s Office transmitted the ordinance in less than a week.In addition, Councilman Price supports providing emergency rental assistance and is looking into a homelessness prevention program.

 Councilmember Price issued the following statement after the unanimous vote:

 “We are living in turbulent times where it has become increasingly challenging for Angelenos to keep a roof over their heads. People at the mercy of some unscrupulous landlords who have been taking advantage of their desperate situations. Stories are flooding in of individuals having to resort to living in substandard conditions. Residents who are one step away from homelessness. Today’s action prevents further hemorrhaging of our current housing crisis by giving the power back to the people of the City of Los Angeles.”

Three New Permanent Supportive Housing Projects Coming to the NEW 9th!

 

Three new projects providing Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) to homeless in the Ninth District were approved on Oct. 15 by the Los Angeles City Council. This was part of the latest round of Prop. HHH funding awarded, bringing the total of PSH units authorized in the 9th District to 712.

The newly approved projects are: Hope on Broadway (48 PSH units); 4507 Main St. (33 PSH units plus an additional 30 affordable housing units); and Central Apartments (56 PSH units).

"I am so proud of the progress we have been making to bring forth an unprecedented number of permanent supportive housing units for our most vulnerable. The hard work continues to pay off, and we will continue to lead by example in our efforts," said Councilman Curren Price.
